I'm Grace, a former fashion designer and proud cat mom to nine fur babies. My world was turned upside down in 2018 when I lost one of my beloved cats. Devastated, I turned to needle felting as a way to keep my furry friend's memory alive. Though my first creation was far from perfect, it sparked a passion that would soon change my life.
I quickly realized that many pet owners share similar experiences and might want custom felted replicas of their pets—whether to honor a departed companion or to give as a meaningful gift. These wool sculptures offer a tangible connection to our animal buddies, preserving their memory and personality in a truly unique way.
As I ventured into this new path, I knew I needed to master both needle felting techniques and animal anatomy to create lifelike pet sculptures. I immersed myself in online tutorials, books, and local workshops, practicing around the clock. Starting with basic shapes, I gradually took on more complex forms and textures, honing my craft.
To better understand pet structure and posture, I delved into animal anatomy and kinesiology. I spent hours observing my own cats, noting their bone structure, muscle placement, and natural movements. I also pored over countless pet photos and videos, picking up on the subtle differences between breeds.
Drawing on my fashion design background, I used colored pencil techniques to hand-draw realistic eyes. For fur texture, I experimented with various wool types and blending methods to mimic the unique coat qualities of different breeds. By mixing colored wools, I achieved natural shades and patterns, and with a special combing technique, I gave the felt a lifelike, fluffy appearance.
Throughout this journey, I discovered that each pet has its own unique personality and quirks. I began to notice those little details that make each animal special—the way a cat cocks its head, the unique shape of its ears, or the subtle curve of its nose. These nuances became the heart of my work, allowing each felted pet to truly capture the individual it represents.
As my skills improved, I started taking orders from friends and family. Their touching responses showed me that my creations captured not just their pets' looks, but also their essence and spirit. This encouragement motivated me to keep refining my craft, eventually turning my passion into a business. With the full support of my boyfriend, we co-founded "FeltPals," allowing more people to have these unique mementos.
Now, when I start a new pet felting project, whether it's an order through the FeltPals website or a private commission, I pour my heart into every detail. I carefully study the photos clients send and learn about their pet's story. Then, using my hands and skills, I transform these precious memories into tangible works of art.
